Meetoo and Tarot? Embodiments of divine Justice

The other day I had a friend over for tea and conversation turned toward the Kavanaugh appointment and the larger context of the #metoo movement. My friend and I come from a generation who experienced attempted assaults as something you just had to fend-off, lock away as a secret, and get on with your life. My friend felt both inspired and disturbed by #metoo. Inspired that people were speaking-out but disturbed that it might be reinforcing the old tired notion of women as helpless victims, or worse, manipulators who “cry rape” for petty reasons.

“Let’s look at the movement from a Tarot perspective,” I said. “#Metoo started-out as Page of Swords. It’s a young movement that was—at first—starting a difficult conversation and bringing hidden events to light.

“Now it’s progressed to Knight of Swords. #Metoo is gaining momentum but doesn’t quite know where to go yet. It’s all over the place. But pretty soon the movement will stabilize its power and direction. It’ll mature into Queen of Swords. And she’s a woman with a sword. She’s definitely not a victim. Finally it will become King of Swords and that’s real institutional change. Things like laws which allow self-defense pleas for women accused of killing their traffickers. All these lead to the Justice Card - a global revolution of consciousness.

This is one of the many ways Tarot helps me make sense of the world—and one reason I love it. Tarot helps me gain perspective on both larger social issues and smaller personal ones. It can be a tool of empowerment. Make a Justice altar to bring forth the energies of compassion for assault survivors and real change to the legal system. In an era of fake news and media spin … having an altar to stay focused on what you truly believe in can help battle feelings of hopelessness.
