The Devil Made Me Do It ... what happens when good people do bad things?

A friend of mine confessed that she keyed a car. She felt bad about it. But it wasn’t entirely unjustified. Seems her neighbor let his wastrel party-animal sons move into the house with the predicable result of loud music late at night, screaming fights peppered with profanity, and cars pulling-up to make a quick drug-deal. One night my friend gave-in to her baser yearnings and keyed one of the wastrels’ cars.

I assured her that I’d done much worse in my life. Of course I also encouraged her in the direction of calling the cops next time the wastrels got out of control. But her confession brings up an interesting question: what happens when good, spiritual people do bad things?

Catholics have this wired. Confession and absolution is ritualized and sacred. But most people I know don’t practice Catholicism. I’ve really struggled with this, too. In my evolution from teen runaway living on the streets to university grad to spiritual healer I had to confront the demons of past deeds. But my journey through the depths of despair led me to the light of love and compassion. I don’t know if you can be a light worker without also being a shadow worker.

Sometimes clients tell me they’re weighted by a past mis-deed. Something way worse than keying a car. Of course the best solution is to apologize and make it right. Apology without amend is pretty much blowing smoke up someone’s ass.

But what happens when you can’t make amends? In some situations trying to apologize or make amends would make tings worse. Some secrets should never be told. In that case, do something good. Volunteer, donate anonymously to charity. Leave money on the street for anyone to find. If you’re weighed down by an ugly deed, balance the scales by bringing a little more light, beauty, or love into the world.
